Message from the Commissioner
It is with great sadness that I advise of the loss of Retired Assistant Commissioner Darryl Leslie Pepper, of Toowoomba who passed away on Thursday 18 June 2026.
Darryl commenced his firefighting career on the Gold Coast on 15 September 1975 and was promoted to District Officer in 1988. He became Assistant Commissioner in March 1997 and retired as Assistant Commissioner on 19 January 2002, completing over 26 years of service.
Darryl travelled extensively throughout Queensland, performing statewide portfolios in Human Resource Management and communications. He was appointed Director and Chief Fire Officer in the Northern Territory in 2002. Darryl served the community with pride and dedicated his life to the Fire Service.
On behalf of the Queensland Fire Department, I extend my deepest sympathies to Darryl’s family, friends and colleagues. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this difficult time.
A funeral service for Darryl will be held at Burstow’s Funeral Home – 1020 Ruthven Street, Toowoomba at 12:30 pm on Friday 10 July 2026. The dress standard is Full Dress Uniform (no baseball caps). The wake following will be held at City Golf Club, 254 South Street, Toowoomba.
